Underwater Swimming




Underwater swimming was a competition held at the second modern Olympic Games in Paris in 1900 .

Points were awarded as follows:
  • Two points for every metre swum under water

  • One point for every second the swimmer stayed below the surface


The competition was held over a maximum of 60 m.

The winner was ( France ) and Peter Lykkeberg ( Denmark ).

This was the first and only time underwater swimming was held at the Olympic Games: The sport was not featured at subsequent games because of lack of spectator appeal.
