#The Border Control Directorate controls ports of entry. #The Enforcement and Removals Directorate is responsible for the identification, monitoring, and removal or deportation of immigration offenders. Border control and entry clearance Last year, British Immigration Officers facilitated the arrival of nearly 90 million passengers in the UK, more than 12 million of whom were subject to immigration control. Eurostar passengers now pass through UK Immigration control before they embark for the UK, and this has had a significant effect on the arrival of passengers without the correct documents. With the Foreign And Commonwealth Office , UKVisas working from British Diplomatic Posts overseas decide applications from people who need to get permission to enter the UK before they travel. Law enforcement It is the job of the UK Immigration Service to deter illegal workers and illegal entrants, and Immigration Officers have legal powers to detain them and remove them from the country. One of their main targets is organised people traffickers and they work closely with the authorities in other countries, gathering intelligence and mounting operations. Immigration Officers The Aliens Act 1905 first created immigration officers with the power to control who entered Britain. Today it is the Immigration Act 1971 (as amended by subsequent legislation) which is the primary source from which British Immigration Officers take their powers. Although British Immigration Officers are Civil Servants , they are also warranted officers with powers to search, arrest and detain those suspected of breaching the British Immigration laws. They also have powers under British terrorism legislation. British Immigration Officers work at all the major airports and seaports. They also operate at the ferry and rail terminals in Paris , Lille , Calais , Coquelles , and Brussels to prevent those without the correct documents from boarding passenger services to the United Kingdom. There are different ranks of Immigration Officers:
Only Chief Immigration Officers and Inspectors have the authority to authorise the refusal of entry to the United Kingdom. The UK Passport Control Everyone entering the United Kingdom from a country other than the Republic of Ireland must have a passport or other travel document establishing the bearer's nationality and identity. For British citizens and other EU nationals a full valid passport or national identity card suffices. Non-EU nationals may be asked to produce additional documents and answer questions about the nature and purpose of their visit to the UK. Nationals of some countries require an entry clearance or visa to enter the UK. You should apply at a British High Commission or Embassy in your country of residence before you travel. Entry clearance and visa requirements can change but full details are available from your nearest British High Commission or Embassy or from UK Visas. Visas are not issued at ports of entry. Immigration Officers will also require the completion of a landing card, unless a traveller is a national of the European Economic Area (EEA); or the UK is not the final destination and does not need to go through passport control to continue a journey. The vast majority of those arrival in the United Kingdom are processed with minimum formality but not all arriving passengers are immediately granted entry. Sometimes you may have to wait while immigration officers we make more enquiries, using an intepreter if appropriate. Some passengers are not acceptable to the UK authorities, for example, they might not have the correct visa, or the immigration officer might not be satisfied that a person is a genuine visitor or student. In these cases immigration officers will refuse entry. Some, but not all of those decisions attract a right of appeal. If British Immigration Officers refuse a passenger entry to the UK arrangements will then be made to remove that person from the United Kingdom. In some cases immigration officers will grant temporary admission while enquiries are carried out or arrangements are being made to remove a person from the UK. |
