Uefa Champions League 2005-06




The UEFA Champions League 2005-06 is the current season of the European UEFA Champions League Football club tournament. It is the 51st Edition of the tournament. 74 teams from 50 football associations are taking part, starting with the first qualifying round played on 12 July , 2005 . The tournament will end with a final between Arsenal and Barcelona at Stade De France , Paris , on 17 May , 2006 .


QUALIFYING ROUNDS


First round

Title-holders Liverpool F.C. as well as 23 league champions from countries ranked 27 or lower on the 2004 UEFA Ranking were drawn against each other and played two matches, home and away, with the winners advancing to the second qualifying round.


Second round

The 12 winners from round 1, 10 champions from countries ranked 17-26, and 6 second-placed teams from countries ranked 10-15 were drawn against each other and played 2 matches, home and away, with the winners advancing to round 3.


Third round

The 14 winners from the second qualifying round, 6 champions from countries ranked 11-16, 3 second-placed teams from countries ranked 7-9, 6 third-placed teams from countries ranked 1-6, and 3 fourth-placed teams from countries ranked 1-3 were drawn to play 2 maches, home and away, with the winners advancing to the group phase and losers advancing to the first round of the UEFA Cup .


GROUP STAGE

16 winners from the third qualifying round, 10 champions from countries ranked 1-10, and 6 second-placed teams from countries ranked 1-6 were drawn into 8 groups of 4 teams each. The top-2 teams in each group will advance to the Champions League play-offs, while the third-placed teams will advance to round 3 of the UEFA Cup .

Tiebreakers, if necessary, are applied in the following order:
#Points earned in head-to-head matches between the tied teams.
#Total goals scored in head-to-head matches between the tied teams.
#Away goals scored in head-to-head matches between the tied teams.
#Cumulative goal difference in all group matches.
#Total goals scored in all group matches.
#Higher UEFA Coefficient going into the competition.

Teams that have clinched a spot in the UEFA Cup are indicated in ''bold italics''.

Teams eliminated from Europe are indicated in ''plain italics''.

  • FC Thun played their home fixtures at the ground of BSC Young Boys , as FC Thun's home ground did not meet UEFA standards for Champions League play.



Group C



Group D


  • - Lille's normal ground, Stade Grimonprez Jooris , was being renovated and was not available for Champions League play. The nearest ground on French soil that meets Champions League standards, Stade Félix Bollaert , was also not available as its occupant, Lens , were competing in the UEFA Cup . Stade de France was the next-nearest ground in France suitable for Champions League play.

  • - Artmedia played their home fixtures at the ground of ŠK Slovan Bratislava , since Artmedia's own home ground does not meet UEFA standards for Champions League play.

  • --- - Inter's home group matches were played behind closed doors, as ordered by UEFA after the behaviour of their fans in the 2004/05 competition.



ROUND OF 16

Matches were played on February 21 / 22 (1st leg) and March 7 / 8 (2nd leg) ( March 14 for the Ajax - Inter 2nd leg).
