The Town of Turin has a village named Turin . The town is south of Lowville , the county seat.


HISTORY

The town was first settled around 1797.
In 1803 and 1819, parts of Turin were used to create the Town Of Martinsburg .
The Town of Turin was established in 1800 from the Town Of Mexico ( Oswego County ).
The Town Of West Turin formed from part of Turin in 1830.


GEOGRAPHY

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 81.3 Km&2 (31.4 Mi&2 ). 80.8 km&2 (31.2 mi&2) of it is land and 0.5 km&2 (0.2 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.67% water. Part of the town is on the Tug Hill Plateau.

The east town line is defined by the Black River . New York State Route 12 and New York State Route 26 parallel the river through the town.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 793 people, 296 households, and 227 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 9.8/km&2 (25.4/mi&2). There were 417 housing units at an average density of 5.2/km&2 (13.4/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 99.37% White , 0.13% Black or African American , 0.13% Native American , 0.13% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.00% from Other Races , and 0.25% from two or more races. 0.13% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 296 households out of which 35.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.8% were Married Couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.0% were non-families. 19.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $41,364. Males had a median income of $27,000 versus $22,321 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $15,930. 10.5% of the population and 8.6% of families were below the Poverty Line . 14.2% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
