A trout bum is something of a term of art in the Fly Fishing community. Rather than being one who merely fishes, the trout bum is the kind of dedicated fisherman willing to forsake the ordinary responsibilities of life, such as family, fiscal responsibility, and paying work. Trout bumming often leads to Alcoholism and other related substance abuses, but should not necessarily be treated as a root cause. Many trout bums genuinely deny that they have an addiction to trout fishing; nevertheless their behavior meets all of the definitional requirements of a dependency. Some trout bums celebrate their status in defiance of the generally accepted standards of social responsibility. These misguided individuals often take low paying work on the "Guide Circuit," in which fly fishermen Guide other fisherman, flying south in the winter to continue guiding in a perpetual summer. Trout Bums often rely upon their Bamboo fly rods as a primary source of sustenance, not through the catching and eating of fish, but rather as a source of skill which they attempt to turn into paying work. The most successful trout bums may eventually become fishing writers, unsuccessful novelists, or environmental activists, but most simply dedicate their lives to Fishing .
