Travel Search

[http://farechase.yahoo.com Yahoo Farechase] FareChase prior to being acquired by Yahoo! created this market. SideStep was a downloadable application and didn't adopt the model until the second phase of its product.

Other such search engines include [http://sidestep.com sidestep], [http://www.mobissimo.com Mobissimo], [http://www.kayak.com Kayak], Momondo (european low cost) and dohop.com which is able to search 660 low-cost and network airlines and find possible flight connections. In Asia, Bezurk is applying travel meta-search to the local markets. In Australia, I Want That Flight! compares the major airlines.

Travel search engines function differently from the big online booking agencies such as Expedia , Orbitz , Travelocity , Opodo , etc. The online agencies generally do not carry Low Cost Carriers such as Jetblue or EasyJet as these LCCS try to keep their fares down by not paying agent commission and only selling direct from their own sites. These agencies also look to "own the customer," handling everything from search to purchase processing to post-transaction support.

Travel search engines take a much different approach. They present users with results from multiple Web sites -- including online agencies, consolidators and travel suppliers (e.g. Continental Airlines). The consumer then buys directly from the site on which the deal was found, as opposed to buying from the search engine company. These search engines don't offer all products available from all providers. They generally list products from providers who pay to have themselves included. And some include product from some providers without the provider's consent because they know they need their product to remain competitive. Providers of travel products are paid a fee for each booking referral the search engine generates.
