Information About

Towerstream

A fixed wireless pre- WiMAX company based in Middletown, Rhode Island. Towerstream was founded in 2000 by Philip Urso and Jeff Thompson.

Towerstream is a company which brings to market the 802.16 standard which is a "last mile" solution, replacing phone networks for voice, video, and data. WiMAX or Worldwide Interopability for Microwave Access, was standardized in 2005 by the IEEE in both fixed 802.16-2004 and in December 2005 as mobile 802.16e. IEEE 802.16 is working group number 16 of IEEE 802, specializing in point-to-multipoint broadband wireless access.

The WiMAX protocol is a way of networking computing devices together; for example to provide internet access, in a way similar to Wi-Fi, but achieving much higher connection speeds up to 200 Mbit/s over distances up to 20 miles.

Towerstream markets its pre-WiMAX network in Boston , New York , Chicago , Los Angeles , San Francisco , and Providence , Rhode Island. As the first member of the WiMAX forum, Towerstream is poised to implement all of the equipment which was WiMAX standardized and will be coming to market in the near future.

Service

Towerstream is an internet service provider using the pre-WiMAX standard to supply mainly businesses with connection speeds from fractional T1 speeds up to 200 Mbit/s and beyond. As of mid-2005, VoIP service by Vonage has been packaged with the pre-WiMAX service and video streaming is being run through it as well. The "complete solution" for running voice, data, and video over a secure wireless connection and doing it outside of the phone company is a reality.

The company is currently expanding to markets across the United States and gearing up for the implementation of official WiMAX standard equipment.
