The plot involves a from which an intelligent (though indecipherable) message has been received. Krug is also building a spaceship to send to the star system emitting the message, which is to be managed by an Hibernated android crew.

The tower works are directed by Krug's most faithful android, Thor Watchman. Thor had devised a secret religion for androids, based on the vision that their creator, Krug, intends to eventually make them equal to humans. Krug has been kept unaware of the religion adhoring him. Thor's dream is to convince him through indirect means, including the manipulation of his heir, Manuel, through a sex relation with feminine android, Lilith. Thor eventually falls in love with Lilith.

Atfer a Mind-transfer between Krug and Thor, however, the first declares that he will never give freedom to androids. Thor, also upset by the discover of love and sex with Lilith, abandons therefore any hope and orders all androids to stop working for humans.

In the last scenes, Krug and Thor confrontates. The latter, made unable by his lifelong attitude to fight his creator, is pushed against an out-of-order Teleporter , and annihilated. The novel closes with Krug launching himself within his spaceship, alone, towards the solar system from which the message has been sent.
