Tourism In Russia

OVERVIEW

Russia may not be the first and foremost choice when Westerners consider their vacation destinations. However, it does have much to offer. It has a rich cultural heritage, embodied in the city of Moscow with the Tretyakov Gallery , Bolshoi Theatre and The Kremlin 's collections, and the city of Saint Petersburg on river Neva , in proximity to the Baltic Sea , with its famous "white nights", the art collections of the Hermitage Museum and the Russian Museum .

In the countryside there are many little towns with old Cloister s and Castle s. There are cities with their own rich tradition like Kaliningrad (formerly Königsberg) on the Baltic Sea coast, Novgorod on Lake Ilmen , Tver , Vologda , Nizhni Novgorod , Kirov , Ekaterinburg , Rostov and Kazan .

Famous for tourists are cruises on the big rivers like Volga , Lena or Yenisei as well as journeys on the famous Trans-Siberian Railway , that stretch to its eastern terminous of Vladivostok at the coastline of the Pacific Ocean . Other destinations that attract foreign tourists include the Golden Ring regions ( Yaroslavl , Vladimir , Rostov , Suzdal , Uglich , Pereslavl-Zalessky , and Moscow ).

While Russia, as a whole, may be the coldest country in the world, parts of the country have temperate climates. The coasts of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea occur near the temperate Mediterranean Climate zone due to its adjacency to the Mediterranean Sea . A popular vacationing destination is the city of Sochi , known for its Beach es. The Crimea is also a favourite vacation resort; even though this autonomous region is in the Ukraine , many people associate it with Russia because of its long historical connection to Russia. Yalta is the best known vacation center, though Sevastopol is also well known.

Russia is famous for Vodka and for various foods, including Caviar , Borscht , Shashlik and Potato Pancakes (although this is actually a Jewish dish that is not exclusive to Russia).

However, Russia still presents a number of obstacles to the foreign tourist. The visa system is antiquated and costly. Hotels are too few and too expensive in the main cities. Also, with the recent terrorist actions being associated with the darker-skinned Caucasian population, official police racism against all dark skin people is rife.

RUSSIAN VISA

Since the introduction of the new Immigration Law in 2002, Russian visa regulations and requirements have changed significantly. Due to the quickly changing nature of regulations, standards are sometimes ambiguous. Russia is progressively adopting the British/US style in processing visa applications, and one may be required to present proof of earnings, attend an interview or may receive a rejection for a visa application without explanation.

Visa registration in Russia

Once in Russia, it is necessary to register your visa immediately with the local authorities. Failure to register may lead to serious problems including police detention, fines on departure, prevention from boarding the plane, etc. Generally, hotels will complete the visa registration process for patrons. After registration, foreigners must carry their passports and visa documents with them at all times. If traveling further in Russia for more than a day, visas must be registered at all locations. Registration by companies for a fee is illegal and can result in trouble.
