ATTRACTIONS Culture Main article: Culture Of Papua New Guinea The culture of Papua New Guinea is diverse. With so many different clans and languages, different styles of expression have been created everywhere. Forms of cultural expression are shown in Art, Dance, Weaponry, Costumes, Singing, Architecture and much more. Festivals Festival]] Festivals include the Hiri Moale , held in Port Moresby every September, the Mount Hagen show, held annually in August and the Goroka Show, every September, which attracts tourist from all over the world. Markets The Markets are a great drawcard for tourists. Local Arts and crafts are on display and can be purchased for reasonable prices. Some of the items on display are traditional carvings and beadwork, traditional and contemporary paintings on canvas and traditionally woven baskets and serving trays. The larger more tourist orientated markets are usually held once a month in the larger cities. Diving PNG is said to have some of the best diving in the world. Not only are there large quantities of coral reefs to explore, there are also numerous pieces of World War II wreckage that litter the oceans. Some of the best dive spots are at Kavieng , Madang , Alotau and Rabaul . Many of PNG's coral reefs are located within easy swimming distance from the shore, either of the main island, or of one of the many smaller islands of PNG's coast. Surfing Surfing can be enjoyed all year round. The south-east side of PNG includes places such as Hula Beach which is 100km outside Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Boganville Island, Gazelle Peninsula and East New Britain which can be surfed from June through to September. In the north of PNG surfing season is mid October to late April. There are great surfing locations which include Madang and Wewak, with the better and more consistent waves found in Vanimo. Hiking/Trekking The most famous trek in Papua New Guinea is the Kokoda Track . Famous as a World War II battle between Australia and Japan . The other more popular hike is climbing Mount Wilhelm . Hiking in PNG is limitless and the Black Cat Track between Wau and Salamaua is just another example of the many that can be done. |
