It opened in 1956, and has been the site for production of many of GM's Hydra-Matic transmissions since. In February 2006, GM announced that they would invest $500 million to expand the plant to produce the six-speed 6L80 in 2008. The 6L80 is currently built at Willow Run Transmission .
