''Threads of Fate'' is a Computer Role-playing Game for the PlayStation console developed by Square Co., Ltd. (now Square Enix ). It was first published by Square in Japan in 1999 under the title '''''Dewprism'''''. It was published in North America by Square Electronic Arts in 2000 under the new title ''Threads of Fate''. The story revolves around the adventure of two characters, Mint and Rue, and a highlight of the game is that the player is able to play from the perspective of either. STORY AND GAMEPLAY At the beginning of the game, the player is given the option to choose to play through the game as either Mint or Rue. Completing both sides of the story will open up a new ending. The gameplay is simple and action-oriented, rather than turn based, and plays more like an action Platformer than a traditional menu-based RPG like those in the '' Final Fantasy '' series. It is more similar in style to the '' Seiken Densetsu '' games by Square Co., Ltd. or even '' The Legend Of Zelda '' series by Nintendo . The character Mint attacks with a pair of Chakrams and is a proficient magic user. The character Rue is more physical and attacks with his axe-like weapon, Arc Edge. He also has the ability to transform into various monsters that he defeats and can use their attacks and powers. The ring menu used to select Mint's magic attacks or Rue's shape-shifting is reminiscent of the menu system in '' Secret Of Mana ''. Mint is a rebellious, ill-mannered princess who is destined to become queen. Her younger sister, Maya, believes that she is the more mature of the two princesses and thus sees herself as being better fit to one day lead the kingdom. The king's chancellor agrees with this judgment and so Mint is stripped of her birthright and Maya is made the new heir to the throne. Mint runs away from the castle in the hope of finding a fabled relic which will grant her one wish: world domination. Rue is a quiet, caring boy with a mysterious origin. His friend, Claire, died in an attempt to protect him from a strange assassin, and now Rue seeks to find an object that might be able to revive her. The two plots weave together as the main characters, Mint and Rue, meet and discover that they are both hunting for the same legendary artifact. Both travel to a country where a powerful relic is hidden. The player arrives at a town on a ship. After walking around the town there, the player meets a worried inn owner. She explains that a girl, Elena, left town to look for her parents, who left some time ago. The player finds her being mugged by a couple of ruffians. The player fights the ruffians, saving Elena. Elena leads them to her parents, Klaus, who is a Doctor and is searching for a relic as well, and his wife Mira. Then, Mint and Rue follow along Dr. Klaus's suspicions and advice, and reach a deceased researcher's "atelier", where he has left much information on the relics. Here is where either Rue or Mint meets the other. Rue and Mint find another such atelier, where they find a couple of mystical items, and they meet a couple of thieves, Belle and Duke, Belle being a rival of Mint, stealing one of the mystical items, a tiara. The other, a cube, is investigated by Klaus, only for it to be a simple block of rock. However, Klaus suggests another such researcher, named "Fancy Mel". Mel's "world" which cuts into the woods, is childlike and dreamland-esque, with little stars and loopy designs and ground like blankets. Mel's atelier is abandoned except for a couple of little elves that are helpers to Mel. You have to play a couple of challenges until Mel arrives to her atelier. Mel arrives dressed in an outfit matching her home and the atmosphere, which would mean the origin of her name. Mel offers to help the player decipher the cube only if you find one of her helpers, who is missing. The player finds it being harrased by the same bandits that tried mugging Elena. After rescuing it, they return to Mel, who has finished investigating the cube and has written a paper on how to "open" it. SEQUEL The new ending hints at a sequel but Square Enix has no current plans to develop one. MUSIC The music in this game is composed by Junya Nakano who has worked on several other games for Square / Square Co., Ltd. A soundtrack is available. SUCCESS The game was released at the peak of the RPG boom for the original PlayStation , during Squaresoft's "Summer of Adventure" promotion (which included '' Vagrant Story '', '' Legend Of Mana '', '' Chrono Cross '', and '' Parasite Eve II ''), and was largely "lost in the crowd". The outdated graphics (the characters and backgrounds were constructed of crude polygons that resembled the graphics of early Nintendo 64 games) and oversimplistic gameplay led many players to bypass the game in favor of more publicized and technically accomplished games. Despite its limited commercial success, the game is not considered to be altogether bad (its average rating is around a 7.5 out of 10) and is even regarded as a gem in some circles, to the point that it could be said the game carries a Cult Following .
