The Tale Of Despereaux

The story, published in 2003, tells the tale of a mouse named Despereaux, born with a daring heart and romantic spirit who falls desperately in love with the human Princess Pea. His life is bound by chance with her, the king, the rats, a jailer, a dim witted girl, and a cook who makes soup. DiCamillo involves ideas of inner duality (good and evil), abandonment and redemption.

The soup resembles the important death of the queen that dies from a rat falling into it and then soup is not allowed to be thought about or made. The princess who looks at the rat gives the rat a horrible feeling and takes revenge by getting a not so smart peasant who wants to be a princess so bad that she is tricked by the rat and then gets the princess and herself locked in the dungeon. It is up to the brave mouse that is in love with the queen to save her.
