The Monkey is a Short Story by Stephen King , which appears in the Skeleton Crew story collection. The story centers on a toy Monkey that is apparently possessed by evil. The monkey is found by children, and their parents are, for some reason, freaked out. Periodically, the sinister monkey comes into motion, predicting the death of someone. In the end, the monkey is dumped in a lake in a bag full of heavy stones, thus stopping the deaths. The horror movie flop called "The Devil's Gift" (1984) is based on this story. Stephen King's lone contribution to the series X-Files was an episode called ''Chinga'' that deals with a cursed doll and bears similarities to ''The Monkey''. This doll, which deals out suffering in much the same way as the monkey, also finds itself sinking to the bottom of a lake at the end of the episode. The movie Euro Trip pays a tribute to the Monkey, where in a scene taking place in the dungeon of an exaggerated european sex club, a mechanical monkey who grins and clangs its cymbals manically is shown in close-up with screams in the background, letting the audience imagine what horrors take place off screen. |
