OVERVIEW

As of 2006, there have been four installments:

Each game was then ported to a home platform. ''House of the Dead III'' and ''4'' have been exclusive to Microsoft's Xbox console only, however. Each game also introduced a different spin on the light gun cabinet:

  • In ''The House of the Dead 2'', the gun automatically reloaded when the player pointed it off-screen.

  • ''The House of the Dead III'' introduced the shotgun. One could either pump the barrel or shoot off-screen to reload it.

  • ''The House fo the Dead 4'' introduced an automatic gun with 40 clips in a magazine. There was a small button on the left side that sllowed the player to throw grenades. It also contained a motion sensor; players would shake the gun at crucial moments, such as trying to open a hatch to take an easier route.



STORY

In the early games, the premise was that civilians were trapped in an area haunted by zombies. AMS sent its best agents into the area to save the civilians and contain the zombies. In the last two games, it became more intense, with AMS invading purely technical or military areas that were void of civilians.


RECURRING CHARACTERS



Villans

The two major angatonists, Dr. Roy Curien and Caleb Goldman, have dominated the four games' stories. Curien is the main villan in the first and third games, while Goldman is the villan for the second and fourth game.

In ''The House of the Dead'', (which takes place in 1998) scientists working in Curien's mansion are trapped when zombies are released. When AMS agents Thomas Rogan and G finally confront Curien, Curien unveils his masterpiece, the Magician (Type 0). However, the Magician kills Curien instead, and the "Curien incident" becomes a memory. However, 21 years later, in 2019, Thomas Rogan and a comrade are investigating a research lab when they are attacked. His daughter, Lisa Rogan, and G come to Thomas' aids. Flashbacks and cut scenes in this game show Curien's hopes and reasons for his research. He had hoped to cure his sun, Daniel, by finding out all the secrets of life.

In ''The House of the Dead 2'', (which takes place in 2000), civilians in Venice are terrorized by another group of zombies and monsters. At the end, James Taylor and Gary confront the main vaillan, Caleb Goldman. Goldman says that he saw how humans were destroying the planet and wanted to revert them back to their "nautral state." He is killed, but the "Goldman case of 2000" remains open. In ''The House of the Dead 4'', James Taylor and Kate Green are in the same city when the Goldman incident comes alive. Through cut scenes and flashbacks, Goldman reveals more of his line of thought as well as hint at what else he created. In the end, James and Kate discover Goldman's true legacy - he has opened Pandora's Box with the monster The World. James and Kate succeed in defeating The World, giving humantity hope.


Protagonists

  • Thomas Rogan is the main protagonist of the first game.

  • G is an AMS agent who helped Thomas Rogan uncover and close the Curien incident. He also helps James and Gary in ''The House of the Dead 2''; his files reveal the weak points in the boss battles. He comes back in 2019 to aid Rogan's daughter, Lisa, to resuce her dad in another Curien-related incident.
