Information About

Thames Measurement

Thames Measurement, also known as '''Thames Tonnage''' is a measurement of smaller vessels (ships and boats)

= \left ( ({length}-{beam}) imes {beam} imes rac {beam}{2} ight ) / {94}

Since schoolchildren are trained to simplify all equations, it is odd that this equation has not been simnplified. It may be that it has been left in "full" to seek to show the rationale for the measurement.

Simplification:

= rac {({length}-{beam}) imes{beam}^2} {188}

Further simplification may only serve to complicate calculation

  • Another source states a less mathematical root as: "''a measure of a ships size calculated by measurements, derived originally from estimating the number of 'tun' barrels of wine a ship could carry.''" {Link without Title}
