The television sports genre has become more popular thanks to the help of dedicated sports channels on cable television. Such popular channels as Fox Sports and ESPN which have dedicated around the clock coverage have made the television sports genre so popular and convenient to sport lovers around the world. Television networks are prepared to pay vast sums of money to secure the rights to major sporting events. As a result, sport is 'packaged' as a televsion spectacle in order to attract high ratings and advertising revenue. This is a very serious and competitive business. In January, 2006 channel Seven and Ten secured a 780 million dollar deal for the rights to broadcast the AFL from 2007 to 2011. There is however a very good reason for this. Sports in Australia is a huge following and companies will pay large amounts of money just for 30 seconds of advertisement time because they know that if the target audience is watching their add will be successfully communicated and their products users should increase. Seven and ten know that the amount of revenue received from these adds will be substantially larger than what they paid to get the contract. FORMULA COMMENTARY TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS Technological Innovations have been introduced to the televising of sporting events as a way of bringing the television viewer as close as possible to the action. As a result, television networks are looking to achieve high ratings and increase advertising revenue. An example is the televising of V8 supercar racing in Australia. In particular in-car video cameras are used to put the viewer in the 'driver's seat'. |
