The Sydney Accord is an international mutual recognition agreement that includes Australia, South Africa, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The United States has not signed the accord because the technology field is not well defined or acknowledge within the country. This is because a professional registration program for a Technologist is opposed by the NCEES. It is expected that a unified definition of focus will be represented by the ABET/TAC accreditation. However, the Sydney Accord also represents an Applied Science focus as indicated by the titles exhibited by Canada, and Hong Kong. The United Kingdom's professional engineering title known as an ''Incorporated Engineer'' represents an Applied Science and Engineering Technology focus. It is therefore inappropriate for ABET/TAC to sign the Accord as the exclusive representative for the United States. The National Association of Industrial Technologist (NAIT) is also an accreditation considered appropriate to sign the Accord within the United States. It is unclear if distance education programs are also included as valid participants. If distance education programs are acknowledged then the Distance Education Training Council (DETC) could also be included as an appropriate accreditation to sign the Sydney Accord. Regardless of this confusion it is clear that the Sydney Accord representatives are courting the ABET/TAC accreditation. The criteria of the Accord was written to make it favorable for ABET/TAC to be included. It is reasonable to consider the ABET/TAC program as the tentative United States analogue to the Sydney Accord. SEE ALSO |
