Susan Crennan





BIOGRAPHY


Crennan is one of five children of Working-class Irish-Catholic parents. She was educated at the University Of Melbourne , where she received a Bachelor of Arts. She later received a Bachelor of Laws for study at the University Of Sydney . Crennan has also completed a post-graduate diploma at the University of Melbourne on the constitutional history of the state of Victoria .

Crennan was born and lives in Victoria, but has also worked in New South Wales . She became a Barrister in both states in 1979 , and was made a Queen's Counsel in both states in 1989 . From 1992 to 1997 , Crennan served as a commissioner of the Human Rights And Equal Opportunity Commission , the peak Human Rights body in Australia. In 1993 , Crennan became the first woman to be appointed chair of the Victorian Bar Council , and the following year became the first female president of the Australian Bar Association . On 13 May 2003 , she became a member of the Council of the University of Melbourne (Term expiring 31 December 2005).

Crennan was appointed to the bench of the Federal Court in 2003 and took her seat on the bench on 3 February 2004 .
