Susak (Italian Sansego) is a small island on the northern Adriatic coast of Croatia , some 7 km southwest from the island of Lošinj and 10 km south of the island of Unije . The coast of Italy is about 120 km to the southwest. The island is about 3 km long and 1.5 km wide, with the highest elevation point at 98 m above sea level. The island is geologically different from other Croatian islands, as it is mostly formed of fine sand laid on rock base. It is believed that during the last Ice-age Susak was located on end of river Po . The island has a single settlement of the same name. Susak has only 188 inhabitants (census of 2001), and a large emigration living in United States , with most residents settling in the northeast New Jersey area or Seattle, Washington area. There are 6 major family names of the residents of Susak: Picinich, Mattesich, Morin, Bussanich, Scrivanich & Tarabocchia. Susak is famous for its Wine and for the Susak Expo (an international annual Art event attracting leading contemporary Artists , which has, in recent years, gained a reputation similar to the Venice Biennale ).
