Sumoto (洲本市; -shi) is a City located on Awaji Island and in Hyogo , Japan . The city was founded on February 11 , 1940 . As of January 1, 2006 , the city has an estimated Population of 49,969 and a Density of 274 persons per Km² . The total area is 182.45 km². On February 11 , 2006 the town of Goshiki from Tsuna District merged into the city of Sumoto . SCHOOLS There are five public junior high schools: Seiun, Suhama, Yura, Aiga, and Nakagawara.
