Much of the abuse went on because of three factors:
# The children were allowed absolutely no contact with their parents (or anyone outside of the program) until the staff was sure that the child had begun to buy into the program dogma, a process that could take months, and
# The parents themselves were told during this beginning process repeatedly that the child would end up dead if they withdrew them from the program, and
# The parents were told additionally that if the child complained or wanted to be taken out, it is simply because they wanted to return to using drugs.

There have been numerous reports of Straight keeping adolescents who showed no signs of addiction and had no history of drug use, yet insisting that the child would end up dead if withdrawn. The last Straight, Inc. center closed in 1991 , although several of its spin-offs are still in operation, surrounded by controversy.
