Stevenson School is a highly selective school for college-bound boarding and day students known for an ideal location, a roomy and appealing campus, highly successful preparation for college, and an amazing breadth of extracurricular activities including both athletics and the arts. Stevenson School is considered to be one of the best college preparatory schools in the US. Students belong to the brightest in the US. In 2005 two Stevenson Seniors took part in the Intel Science Talent Search, also known as the "Junior Nobel Prize". Both students made it to the semifinals and one student was among the 40 finalists. The 40 finalists for 2005 were selected from more than 1,600 applicants by a national jury of professional scientists and met the President George Bush. After graduation Stevenson School students attend the best colleges in the country and overseas. In 1952 Robert and Marian Ricklefs saw the realization of a long-held dream: the establishment of a boarding school on the Monterey Peninsula. At that time a school only for boys, the institution was called the Robert Louis Stevenson School—honoring the well-known author who reportedly found inspiration for his tales of high adventure during his 1870's sojourn in the Monterey area. Robert Ricklefs served as headmaster until he retired in 1970; he was succeeded by Gordon Davis, during whose term the school opened its doors to girls as day students. Joe Wandke, the school's president, was appointed in 1983. In 1988 Stevenson became a two-campus school comprising grades kindergarten through 12. The Lower and Middle School is located in Carmel. |
