Starship Prefixes (star Trek)

REGISTRY NUMBER PREFIXES

NCC / NX

"NCC" is the default prefix given to Starfleet vessels. The usage likely began sometime in the latter half of the twenty-second century following the formation of the Federation's new Starfleet. "'''NX'''" is tradionally given to Pathfinder vessels and signifies a spaceframe still undergoing field trials. The 22nd century Earth Starfleet named its first Warp 5 capable starship an ''NX''-class vessel, though it is not known if the Federation Starfleet uses the prefix as an homage to the early Earth vessel. It has been suggested conjecturaly, that NCC stands for "Naval Contract Construction". Though this has never been confirmed in any episode or movie.

NCV

"NCV" is a Starfleet prefix used in the 29th century, presumably for timeships. It is possible that "NCV" applies to all Starfleet vessels in the 2800s but this has not been confirmed. It is possible that NCV stands for Non - Commissioned Vessel.

NFT

"NFT" was the prefix shown on the transport ships, ''Lakul'' and ''Robert Fox'' which were destroyed in 2293. Though the ''Lakul'' was transporting El-Aurian refugees, the vessels appear to be Federation in origin. It is not known what "NFT" stands for though the Lakul is introduced as a "transport ship."

SHIP NAME PREFIXES

ISS

"ISS" stands for Imperial Star Ship and was used by the Terran Empire 's fleet throughout the 22nd and 23rd centuries.

SS

Likely first used in the late twentieth century, SS originally stood for "Sleeper Ship," a vessel incapable of reaching Warp velocities. The SS ''Botany Bay'' made infamous in 1996 by Khan Noonien Singh was a sleeper ship.

After Humanity discovered Warp Drive , the prefix was given to some faster-than-light vessels and remained in use for civilian vessels at least until the 24th century though it is unlikely that it still stood for "Sleeper Ship." No alternative has as yet been presented onscreen though many fans assume the meaning was changed to "Star Ship" despite the word "Starship" generally being shown as a solitary word in Star Trek . The ''Oberth''-class Starship ''Tsiolkovsky'' was given the SS name prefix, though it appeared to be under Starfleet control.

USS

"USS" is the default name prefix for Starfleet vessels (e.g. USS ''Voyager'').
