''Squawk Box'' can refer to a number of television programmes broadcast by the CNBC group of television channels, at breakfast time on the stations they are aired. Most specifically, it refers to the original US program on which the others are based. The title originates from the term for the use of an intercom in investment banks and stock brokerages to communicate stock deals or sales priorities. SQUAWK BOX The original Squawk Box is a morning TV Program on CNBC in which the hosts and a guest analyze the investment market. It is named after the squawk box, an Intercom system loudspeaker used on Trading Desk s. The programme airs from 6am until 10am Eastern Time . It is also relayed live on CNBC Europe from Noon until 3pm Western European Time (except on the week between the last Sunday of March and the first Sunday of April; sometimes it is pre-empted for local programming, in cases of major events such as European Central Bank interest rate announcements) and is also relayed live on CNBC Asia . The program was originally presented by New Jersey lawyer Mark Haines . Other regular contributors included Joe Kernen , David Faber , Rebecca Quick , Steve Liesman , and others. Maria Bartiromo appeared on the show on occasion. The programme currently covers the opening bells of the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ Stock Market at 9:30am Eastern Time. The program has its own blog on MSN Spaces , called ''SquawkBlog'', where the program hosts post their comments. The show also has a daily poll on CNBC's website, called "SquawkBack." The program underwent a significant revamp on December 19 , 2005 , with its expansion to a four hour slot (6am-10am ET). Joe Kernen, Rebecca Quick, and Carl Quintanilla are the new hosts, with Mark Haines, Erin Burnett (both of whom anchor from the New York Stock Exchange ), and David Faber presenting the Squawk On The Street segment from 9am-10am. Charlie Gasparino , formerly of Newsweek magazine, is CNBC's on-air editor, joining Kernen, Quick, and Quintanilla during the 6am-9am show. There has been an avalanche of negative complaints against these new changes, most notably the removal of Mark Haines from the Squawk Box team. On the SquawkBox Blog, over 200+ complaints have been entered into the site, along with numerous messages posted on the CNBC Squawk Box message board, plus over 500 complaints have been e-mailed directly to CNBC about the changes. SQUAWK BOX EUROPE There also exists a programme entitled Squawk Box Europe on CNBC Europe, aired from 6:00am-9:00am GMT each weekday. This is presented by Geoff Cutmore, other contributors include Louisa Bojesen, Guy Johnson, and Bill Hubard. Like the US programme, a guest host also appears on the programme each day. It covers the opening of the European markets at 8:00am GMT. Prior to the adoption of the current on-air look in September however. Squawk Box Europe airs in the United States on CNBC World at the respective time, 1:00 AM - 4:00 AM, ET. SQUAWK BOX ASIA CNBC Asia also airs a programme entitled Squawk Box Asia from 6:00am-9:00am ( Hong Kong / Singapore time). This programme is also aired on CNBC World in the United States at the respective time (5:00 PM - 8:00 PM) covers the opening of the Asian markets and is presented by Martin Soong. Unlike the US and European programmes, there is no guest host on the Asian programme. SQUAWK BOX FANTASY PORTFOLIO CHALLENGE On April 4 , 2006 , CNBC started the "Squawk Box Fantasy Portfolio Challenge." That contest, which is going on now, runs through May 26, 2006.
