Brazil is one of the few Latin America n countries which were not colonized, influenced, nor settled by Spain . But those Spanish settlers in Brazil were enticed by the nature of employment which caused them misfortune. In the beginning (from the 1880's onwards) most of these Spanish immigrants were Galician smallholders who settled mainly in urban areas of Brazil. Starting in the early 20th Century , most Spaniards were Andaluzian peasants who immigrated to Brazil to work in the Coffee plantations, mainly in rural areas of São Paulo State . Like other immigrants, they brought their entire family, including children. After working in Coffee farms, their job as permanent residents is Scrap Metal merchant or Restaurant employees. But then, they become flexible in other skills. Spanish immigrants numbered approximately 14% of the foreign settlers in Brazil (700.000 Spaniards immigrated to Brazil between 1880-1950), being the third largest foreign ethnic group, after the Portuguese and Italians , while 78% of them settled São Paulo State. Many Spanish Brazilians are also transferring to cities and towns. There is an stimated 15 million Brazilians of direct Spanish descent {Link without Title} . They are totally integrated into Brazilian society and nowadays most of them only speak Portuguese . Nonetheless, Spanish is nowadays the third most important language in Brazilian schools (after Portuguese and English ). Spanish and Portuguese are the main languages of both Latin America and Brazil. A mixed language based on Portuguese and Spanish was developed in Brazil called Portuñol , which is used on Brazilian border with Spanish-speaking countries. Most Spanish Brazilians are Roman Catholic , with some communities adhering to Protestantism and Judaism . |
