Soviet Order Of Battle For Invasion Of Poland In 1939

The Soviet order of battle for invasion of Poland in 1939 details the major combat units arrayed for operations against Poland in September, 1939. The Polish September Campaign is best remembered for the German-Polish fighting, but the Soviets contributed a large force to reunifications of Belarus ian and Ukrainian lands with their countries. Joining battle after the Germans had already launched their attacks, the Soviets met little resistance, but were prepared for battle. Like the Germans, the Soviets employed two primary prongs of assault, each managed by a front (similar to the structure of German army groups).

BYELORUSSIAN FRONT

The Soviet Byelorussian Front commanded four armies and was the northern of the two fronts invading.

Third Army

The Soviet 3rd Army comprised two corps-sized units.

Fourth Army

The Soviet 4th Army comprised two corps.

Tenth Army

The Soviet 10th Army comprised one corps.

Eleventh Army

The Soviet 11th Army comprised unknown units.

UKRAINIAN FRONT

The Soviet Ukrainian Front covered the southern portion of the invasion of Poland in 1939, and comprised three armies.

Fifth Army

The Soviet 5th Army comprised two corps.

Sixth Army

The Soviet 6th Army comprised two corps.

Twelfth Army

The Soviet 12th Army comprised four corps.
