Information About

Southeast Christian Church

The church started construction of a 550-seat sanctuary on January 22 , 1967 , and completed phases II, III, and IV by June, 1978 , which added education space, a nursery, and an all-purpose building. By Easter 1976 , regular attendance at the church broke 1,000.

In 1983 , the congregation began the search for a new, larger building, and on April 12 , 1987 , they moved into their new building for worship. Attendance continued growing and by Easter 1990 , regular attendance exceeded 10,000 for the first time. By 1992 , yet another larger building was needed. A capital stewardship campaign raised $30,316,485, well over its goal. The groundbreaking on the new location, at 920 Blankenbaker Parkway, was conducted on September 25 , 1994 , and the new facility opened its doors in December, 1998 . Over 24,000 people attended the first Christmas Eve services on December 24 , 1998 .

In September, 1995 , the church launched its weekly newspaper, ''The Southeast Outlook''.

By 1999 , average weekly attendance jumps from 10,500 to 13,000. By April, 2004 , attendance at the Easter services rose to 29,424. In previous years, in an effort to have the entire congregation in place for a single service, the church had conducted Easter services at Freedom Hall , the arena that is home to the University Of Louisville men's Basketball teams. Attendance at these services has now exceeded Freedom Hall's capacity.

Michael W. Smith 's second album of contemporary worship music, ''Worship Again'', was recorded live at Southeast Christian in 2002 .

Bob Russell, the senior minister of Southeast, has announced that he will retire in June of 2006. He will hand his duties over to associate ministers Dave Stone and Kyle Idleman.

Southeast Christian also operates Country Lake Christian Retreat Center near Henryville, Indiana . In June 2004 , some teenage campers supervised by a 24-year-old employee of the Church destroyed a statue of the Virgin Mary at a nearby home of a Catholic after studying the worship of false idols. Senior pastor Bob Russell addressed the incident in a weekend service in July.

There is a Spanish worship service, Nueva Vida and it meets on Sunday mornings at 10:45.
