GEOGRAPHY


South Sumter is located at 33°53'40" North, 80°20'8" West (33.894445, -80.335583).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the CDP has a total area of 6.9 Km&2 (2.7 Mi&2 ). 6.9 km&2 (2.7 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 3,365 people, 1,196 households, and 851 families residing in the CDP. The Population Density was 488.4/km&2 (1,266.0/mi&2). There were 1,395 housing units at an average density of 202.5/km&2 (524.9/mi&2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 8.95% White , 89.93% African American , 0.21% Native American , 0.00% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.15% from Other Races , and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,196 households out of which 30.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.8% were Married Couples living together, 31.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.35.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 85.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $23,339, and the median income for a family was $24,939. Males had a median income of $26,425 versus $17,077 for females. The Per Capita Income for the CDP was $10,292. 24.9% of the population and 21.8% of families were below the Poverty Line . 30.9% of those under the age of 18 and 31.4% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
