''Soul Blazer'' (or '''''Soul Blader''''' in Japan) is a Super Nintendo Entertainment System game by Enix and Quintet released in 1992 . Similar to Enix and Quintet's other video game, '' ActRaiser '', the player takes the role of a deity sent to restore normalcy to a world overrun with evil by battling its agents on the earth.

As in ''ActRaiser'', the player frees a series of towns by fighting monsters in traditional dungeon-crawl battles (''Act Raiser'' was side-scrolling; ''Soul Blazer'' is top-down). ''Soul Blazer'' eschews the '' SimCity ''-like aspect of ''ActRaiser''. Unlike ''ActRaiser'', the player frees the towns incrementally -- each time the player wipes out a group of monsters belonging to the same "monster lair", a "soul" belonging to a former occupant of the town is liberated, and the corresponding body is reincarnated. This is occasionally a human, but in the variety of towns it could be anything from a dolphin to a talking tulip. The freed town occupants give the player advice and items. When the player defeats the monster imprisoning the "soul" of the head of each town (who is typically a " Boss " -- a powerful monster, in game jargon), the town is cleared and the player can continue.

The game's backstory concerns a king (Magridd) who made a pact with an evil entity called "Deathtoll" ("Dark Gaia" in the Japanese version). The empire was called the Freil Empire, ruled by King Magridd. Deathtoll offered the king one gold piece for each soul from his kingdom; the king was more than happy to take him up on the offer. As a result, the villages were destroyed, every living creature was captured, and the world became empty. Deathtoll, who lies in the "World of Evil" is the final "boss" in the game -- when the player defeats Deathtoll, the game is over. To open the "World of Evil" the Hero must obtain six stones in this order: brown, green, blue, silver, purple, and black.

''Soul Blazer'' spawned two sequels: '' Illusion Of Gaia '' and '' Terranigma ''. It was Scored by Yukihide Takekawa .

SYNOPSIS

The synopsis appears when the player waits a five seconds at the title screen, then the ''Soul Blazer'' logo disappears and the sword below the title rises to the top of the screen, and then shows the text of the synopsis. The synopsis at the title screen appears as follows:

''Wise men tell a tale late at night of a great King destroyed by the temptation of evil.''

''The Freil Empire, as it was called in those days, was ruled by a powerful man, King Magridd.''

''It seems most people thought the King was a fair and kind ruler. There were some, however, who felt the King himself was ruled by greed.''

''One day the King happened to overhear two guards talking about a man named Dr. Leo. Now Dr. Leo was considered by all to be a great inventor and a genius.''

''The King stayed up many nights wondering how he could use this great inventor to make him even more wealthy.''

''All of a sudden the King had an idea. He ordered his guards to capture Dr. Leo and bring him to the castle at once!''

''Soon Dr. Leo was brought to the castle.''

''The King confined him in a small room and ordered him to invent a machine that would summon the King of evil, Deathtoll.''

''Dr. Leo finally completed the machine. The King instantly called upon Deathtoll, hoping they might strike a deal.''

''After many days the deal was complete. The King would bring Deathtoll all living creatures, and in return, Deathtoll would give him a gold piece for each.''

''One by one, all living creatures began to disappear. Soon the world was completely empty.''

''Two people were watching this catastrophe, the Master, and you ''(Eiyuu), ''his follower.''

''"The King was very foolish to be tempted by evil, however I will give him another chance. You must go down to Earth and revive the World!" the Master said.''

''On a ray of light you descended to Earth..... ..A warrior sent to revive the living and punish evil. A SOUL BLAZER!!''

CHARACTERS

  • Eiyuu (Hero): The player-character, you are an angel sent down to the world by the Master to restore its creatures to life. Skilled with a sword and possessing the ability to speak with any living thing and be understood, you will fight the hordes of Deathtoll on your own, with only the direct assistance of your soul helpers. In Illusion Of Gaia , he is referred to as "Blazer" by the hidden boss, Solid Arm.

  • The Master: The chief deity in the Soul Blazer world; townspeople close to death often speak that they hear the Master "calling" them. In a game context, he will transport you between the regions on the overworld map, as well as save your game progress; entering his temple will also restore your health to full capacity.

  • Dr. Leo: Created the machinery by which King Magridd's pact with Deathtoll was executed. Also created a series of paintings and models so realistic that one could be drawn into them by touching them. He possesses an empath's level of closeness to nature despite his technological background, one that extends past his daughter and their pets.

  • Lisa: Leo's daughter and a resident of Grass Valley, she lives alone in a home on the edge of town. When Eiyuu saves her, she harbors a gratefulness to him that gradually transforms into love ... but can love between a human and an angel exist?

  • Turbo the Dog, Lue the dolphin, Nome the Snail, and Marie the doll: The pets of Dr. Leo and Lisa.

  • King Magridd: Not so much evil as misguided. Unfortunately, the King is easily swayed under pressure, and he feels a disconnection from his subjects. This dissatisfaction leads him to coerce Dr. Leo into designing a machine to summon Deathtoll, bringing about the fall of the world, including himself.

  • Queen Magridd: Seduced by the potential that lurked underneath Dr. Leo's skills, the Queen is the primary catalyst for causing the deal with Deathtoll to happen at all. She is insane and does anything to prevent to stop Deathguise.

SOULS

Souls in the game take on the appearance of a glowing orb of light that rotates counter-clockwise around your character. As you encounter friendly spirits in your quest, some of them will merge with this orb to offer you various abilities. They include:
  • Soul of Magician: Required to advance, and the most useful soul, this allows you to utilize magic spells, most of which either use your current compass heading or the orb, itself, as the means of being cast. Fireball shoots a ball of flame in the direction you face, Rotator causes the orb to spin faster and create a damage field around yourself, and so on.

  • Soul of Light: Creates an illuminated area around yourself, making it easier to navigate through darkened rooms. Not unlike a torch, the radius of this illumination is limited in area.

  • Soul of Shield: The same radius as the Soul of Light becomes immune to certain region-based damage zones.

  • Soul of Detection: Reveals invisible enemies to you within its radius of effect.

  • Soul of Reality: Similar to the Soul of Detection, but this lets you see invisible passageways instead.

MAGIC

  • Fireball: Shoots a single ball of flame in the direction Eiyuu is facing.

  • Light Arrow: Shoots four arrows of light in the primary compass directions.

  • Magic Flair: Causes a ring of power to start "charging" on the soul orb. This ring causes an explosion when the button is depressed.

  • Rotator: Causes the orb to rotate around Eiyuu faster, damaging enemies in the way.

  • Fire Pillar: Three continually-burning columns of flame are placed in intervals around Eiyuu, dissipating after a few seconds.

  • Spark Bomb: Similar to Fire Pillar, but three explosives are placed in intervals, bursting after a moment. Difficult to aim and time.

  • Tornado: Creates a cyclone at the orb's position that randomly travels around the screen, destroying anything in its path.

  • Phoenix: Useless unless Eiyuu is equipped with the Soul Blade and Soul Armor; when worn together, swings of the sword shoot out flaming birds as projectiles.
