He left the company in 1940 to work with Paramount , and in 1947 moved again to 20th Century Fox where he became known for producing commercially, and sometimes critically, successful films. Two of these, " A Letter To Three Wives " ( 1949 ) and " Three Coins In The Fountain " ( 1954 ) were nominated for the Academy Award For Best Picture , while " Gentleman Prefer Blondes " in 1953 was a sizeable hit.

He joined MGM in 1956 , and within two years was appointed vice president in charge of production, overseeing such films as " High Society " (1956) and " Some Came Running " ( 1958 ). He left MGM in the early 1960s to become an independent producer. His last film was the Rod Steiger murder thriller " No Way To Treat A Lady " in 1968 .
