Information About

Social Stigma

As with every language, "Social Stigma" changes over time, context, geography, and other variables. What may be a "pride" or "good" word to use, can at other times/ places etc. be not such a good word to use. Or vice versa: what is bad may become proud and fashionable.

This means that its victims are mostly Minorities which have a common characteristic which sets them apart from other members of society.
The result is a vicious circle: marginalised groups are stigmatized: "Too smart for his/her own good!" Stigmatization leads to social exclusion and marginalised groups are formed, which may then be better/worse than the other group.

Examples of negative social stigmas are physical or mental Handicaps and Disorder s, as well as Homosexuality or affiliation with a specific Nationality , Religion or Ethnicity , as is often the case for the Roma People .
