In addition to voting systems, other areas of social choice theory include Bargaining , where individuals or groups try to reach a collective decision through autonomous bargaining negotiations, and Fair Division , where individuals or groups divide attempt to divide a commodity "fairly" among themselves, with or without the use of an arbitrator. Kenneth Arrow was among the early pioneers of Social Choice theory, proving the impossibility of designing a set of rules for social decision making that would conform to 'reasonable' criteria (the so-called '' Arrow's Impossibility Theorem '', also known as the ''Arrow's paradox''). Among those who performed serious work in social choice theory, is Amartya Sen , Indian-born, Nobel-prize-winning, economist, now at Harvard. See Voting System |
