Sōpurando (ソープランド) is a Japanese word for a type of Brothel where men can be Bath ed by and can bathe with female Prostitute s. There are few soaplands for Gay men. The name is a Portmanteau of the English words " Soap " and "land". Soaplands were originally called "toruko" (トルコ, meaning Turkish ), an abbreviated form of the word for Turkish Bath . The Turkish Ambassador to Japan complained about the name, and the word "soapland" was the winning entry in a nationwide contest to rename the brothels. Although Prostitution has been nominally illegal for more than fifty years in Japan, this supposed illegality has been accomplished by applying a rather strained definition of the term (for example, the definition of "prostitution" for some reason does not extend to a "private agreement" reached between a woman and a man in a brothel), and accordingly soaplands are common throughout the country. The historical entertainment district of Tokyo , Yoshiwara , is still associated with Fuuzoku and has the largest concentration of soaplands in Tokyo. |
