''Silkroad Online'' (also known as '''SRO''' or '''Silk''') is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game ( MMORPG ) which was recently in Beta Testing , but went gold on February 21st and is free forever. It is created by the South Korea n company JOYMAX Co. . Much of the background of the game is based on the Silk Road . SUMMARY ''Silkroad'' is primarily focused around the theme of trading. The game provides players with the choice to assume the roles as one of three different jobs after level 20: a merchant, a hunter or a thief. A merchant is a job which involves transporting goods between towns and guarding their merchandise against hostile forces. The goods purchased in one town can then be sold to another for many times their original worth. This provides a successful merchant with a hefty reward at the end of their journey. The higher the value of goods that the merchant transports, the harder and riskier their journey will become. To make the merchants' life miserable, some players assume the role of a thief. The job of a thief is to kill merchants, take their stuff, and then sell it for their own profit. Thieves are usually team players, selectively attacking their targets as a party, or as a guild. A hunter is a job designed to get in the way between merchants and thieves. Their mission is to kill thieves, and thus are often hired by merchants as body guards during their trade runs. Successfully completing a job earns the character Experience Point s. These points are used to increase the level of the job, and provide the character with job bonuses. Jobs are not fixed, and can be switched every ten minutes. However, whenever you receive thief points, you will lose trader and hunter points. This is also true the other way around. There are plans to update the game with European and Islamic races. These will have access to a new set of skills and weapons, and are assumed to have different starting locations. GOALS Several characters have different goals on the very long path that is known as the Silk Road, and set out to adventure, kill monsters, and generally find fame, glory and power on the Silk Road. However this does not have any importance, for it is just the description of the avatar you choose when making your character. COMMUNITY The game has a wide and constantly growing player base and therefore new servers are in high demand in the English-speaking community. As ''Silkroad'' is an MMORPG, all players on the same Server play in the same environment. Players can fight alone or join parties (max. 8 players with experience share, otherwise 4), sell items using a merchant stall, or trade items directly. The three main areas so far developed ( China , Western China, Oasis Kingdom( Hotan )) consist of main towns, open areas for travel/battle, and "caves"/unique areas. Silkroad also has an extensive guild feature, allowing large groups of people to join together as guilds. As guild members fight, they gain "guild points" that progress their guild to higher levels (which allow for more members and other benefits). Guild trades and hostile guilds can also be established. Normally, only high-level players can create guilds. However, it is still possible for lower levels to create guilds if the required amount of money is given to the Non-player Character (NPC). Lately the party match system has been added to the game. Players can add their party to a list of parties which are looking for members. You can specify certain details like what level range is desired and what the goal is of the party. An auto-potting action has also been added recently. You can access this in the action window, or by pressing T. As well a "emoticon" called "charming action" has been added, which will make a monkey dance. GRAPHICS/SOUND The game is rich in graphics and game play, and the sound is above average with unique New Age oriental tunes that invoke a strong theme and relevant ambiance. Almost all skills, attacks, and abilities have unique animations and/or sounds while items all have unique and distinguishable models. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT There are several "elements" in the game one can level to use for an advantage. These "elements" consist of Force Masteries (and techniques): Fire, Ice, Lightning, and Force, and Weapon Masteries (and techniques): Spear / Glaive , Sword /Blade, and Bow . There is a lot of decision making in the game and there are no fixed professions. Skills can even be reclaimed, for a price. Skill points and experience points increase independently, so it is possible to add and/or upgrade many skills between each character level. Character creation allows a choice from several different characters, male and female, as well as their body types, including characteristics like height and weight. Gaining Experience In Silkroad the amount of experience you gain for skill points and level depends on the difference between your level and the highest mastery level you have in one element. When you kill a monster, the game takes your highest mastery level and compares it to your level. Higher difference between the two will result in high experience given to skill points instead of level (this is known as "SP farming or skill point farming, and is recommended for levels 1-20). If the difference is low you will receive more experience for your level. So if you want to level up faster, keep your mastery level the highest possible at all times, but beware that getting skill points is a tedious task at higher levels. WEAPONS There are five different types of weapon to choose from, all of which fall into three categories: sword, Polearm , and bow. With the exception of the bow group, each consists of two types of weapons, each of which excel in one of either physical or magical damage. In the sword group, swords have a higher magical damage rating, but a lower physical damage rating. The alternative to swords are the blades, which have a higher physical damage rating but a lower magical damage rating. For the polearms, glaives offer higher physical damage, and spears higher magical damage. Compared to swords and polearms, bows tend to have both lower physical and magical damage, but have the option of ranged attacking. Swords in this game are all one-handed; as thus, sword users have the option of equipping a Shield . CLOTHING/ARMOR Defense Equipment is split up into 6 body areas: feet, legs, chest, hands/arms, shoulder, and head. Players can also equip 2 magical rings, 1 magical necklace and 1 pair of magical earrings (these however do not change the appearance of the character). Types of defense equipment fall into 3 categories. There is 'Armor', 'Protector', and 'Garment'. Armor has the highest physical defense, but the lowest magical defense, and can be mixed with protector class armor. Protectors have a balanced physical and magical defense, and can be mixed with Armor. A full suit of protector class armor provides the user with a 10% bonus in movement speed and a 10% reduction in mana usage. Garments have the lowest physical defense but the highest magical defense. Garments cannot be mixed with protectors or armours. A full suit of garment class armor provides the user with a 20% bonus in movement speed and a 20% reduction in mana usage. These 3 types of defense equipment are well balanced and the different sets / combinations are suited for different character builds and world environments. Definitely allowing you to further create your own personal avatar. Armour comes in different degrees. From 1 degree to 8 degree. The highest anyone can get from an NPC is 7th degree. 8th degree must be found through hunting of monsters or trading with other players. ITEM MALL Though the game is free it has recently implemented a feature called the "item mall". A player charges one of the allowed credit cards on the official site and then ingame currency "silk" is given to the players account. Using silk a player can purchase an assortment of different things, such as a pet monkey, exp enhancing scroll, or a small monster decoration for a stall (player made store) among other things. ITEM CLASSES There are four different kinds of items, All of which vary in their individuals stats. Normal Normal, or "white" items, are the most common type of item. All items that can be purchased from NPC vendors will be normal items whose stats are very near the lowest of the stat range in each category. For example, a store-bought weapon. Magical Magical items are items that have one or two item modifiers, ranging from adding to a character's STR or INT points to reducing the duration of abnormalities. Another type of modifier deals with alchemy, which is explained below. Seal Seal items are an extremely rare variant of the base item that has the statistical equivalent of an item several levels above its own. When dropped on the ground, they have a special appearance that defines it from normal and magical item drops. In the inventory, seal items give off a sparkly glow. Every item in the game can be dropped as a Seal item. Although armour Seal items do not give off a special appearance, Seal weapons and shields give off a special glow that are distinct from normal weapons. There are three levels of Seal items: Seal of Star (+5), Seal of Moon (+10), Seal of Sun (+15), listed in order of degree of item enhancement. Ethereal Ethereal items are special in that they cannot be repaired. As such, their durability is always several times greater than normal. These items drop from unique Bosses found throughout the world of ''Silkroad Online''. PLAYER CLASSES Strength Builds DESCRIPTIONS COMING SOON Intellect Builds DESCRPTIONS COMING SOON Hybrid Builds DESCRIPTIONS COMING SOON ALCHEMY The alchemy system allows players to readily enhance their items. Items dropped by monsters can range from unmodified to +1, +2, and so on. This "plus" modifier enhances an item such that its stats are raised to an item of the next level higher. For example, a level 32 sword with a +3 modifier will have the stats of a level 35 sword. Weapons and shield upgraded past +3 will begin to give off a white shimmer; past +5, they will start to glow with a purple aura. At +7, your weapon/shield will give off a golden glow. And max +9 a blue glow. Item modifiers There are three different item modifiers that relate to alchemy: immortal, steady, and lucky, each of which can be used a predetermined amount of times (indicated on the item itself). Immortal prevents the item from breaking upon failure to upgrade, and steady prevents the item from losing durability upon failure. Luck further increases the probability of a successful upgrade. QUESTS There are several Quests in ''Silkroad Online'', virtually all of these quests involve killing a number of monsters, taking items that the quest NPC has asked for, and bringing it back to the NPC. The rewards for these quests are mostly money, experience points, and skill points, but in some quests you will receive items as a reward, such as HP/MP recovery items or a weapon. Quests are helpful in that you must kill monsters to gain experience, so if you have a quest for that monster, you are getting more out of every kill. Quests are based on your character level, and they can help you learn which areas are safe for your level. COMBAT Combat is comparable, visually and gameplay-wise, to similar games within the genre. A character's damage, attacking speed, and range depend on the weapon that character is wielding and that character's stats. New effects show glowing orbs that disperse from and enemy after the enemy is defeated. Green represents experience points, yellow skill points, and red for the beserk meter. After an enemy is defeated it can drop items and money for the victorious player to pick up. Another player may not pick up items that an enemy they did not defeat dropped until after a minute has passed. This helps to keep players from stealing dropped items that rightfully belong to others. After level 5, when a character dies, they lose some experience points and Respawn in town. Alternatively, another player can revive a fallen character, but only if they have mastered the "resurrect" skill. If a player dies several times then that player loses items too. Characters are highly dependent on hit point (HP) and magic point (MP) recovery items. There is a 'Beserker' mode, where if a player kills enough enemies, the Beserker Gauge fills, and the character can transform into a glowing demon-like being, where running speed, attacking speed, defence and strength will be enhanced for a short amount of time. Because of this, it is mostly used in emergencies and taking down strong enemies. After the timer has ended, the character will transform back to normal and the gauge will have to be filled again to receive Berserker mode. Many spells allow a character to enchant their weapon. The weapons can be enchanted with ice, fire, or lightning. This generally increases a character's strength, and the different elements have different effects on enemies. These spells use MP, and end after a very short time. ELEMENTS The 4 elements are Fire, Ice, Lightning and Force. Force class provides healing and passive bonuses. Fire provides stable damage as well as a chance to burn targets (steady amount of damage over time). Ice has relatively low damage but has a chance to "frostbite" targets (slowing down their attack and movement speed) and / or freeze them (render them immobile from moving or attacking). Lightning has a high magical attack rating and can inflict the "lightning" effect on targets (lowering their "parry rate", which results in higher damage being dealt to them). Non-offensive skills follow the offensive attacks with similar attributes. Many ice skills increase defense or slow enemies down. Fire skills increase damage and cause burns. Lightning skills increase movement speed and parry rate. Skills are relatively balanced for PvP fighting, but certain skills are better suited for certain weapons, though it is all up to the user. Any combination of elements can be used at the same time, so players are not restricted to one element for use. PVP There is also Player Versus Player (PvP) combat in ''Silkroad Online''. At level 10 and over one can purchase capes that allow attacks against any player outside of a town wearing a different coloured cape. A character cannot gain or lose anything in PvP in ''Silkroad''. At level 20 and over, one can attack any player also 20 or over, but killing enough people results in a "Murderer" status where that character's name goes red. Any player can attack a "Murderer." This results in a large mob of players running after a "Murderer", attempting to kill him. If a player dies while in "Murderer" status, they risk losing exp and/or money/items. Players of different professions (Thief, Hunter, Trader) can attack each other, both in defense or to defeat other players for experience, items and money. DUNGEONS The Donwhang Stone Cave has 4 Floors, each of which increase with difficulty over the lower floor. The Monsters levels range from lv.61-70. You cannot enter the Dungeon unless you are lv.50+ and it is recommended not to train there until you are at least lv.60.
