HISTORY

Surveyor S. W. B. Carnegy suggested that the county be named after his native country of Scotland . He also gave several settlements in the area Scottish names.


GEOGRAPHY

According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 1,138 Km&2 (439 Mi&2 ). 1,136 km&2 (438 mi&2) of it is land and 2 km&2 (1 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.18% water.

DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 4,983 people, 1,902 households, and 1,302 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 4/km&2 (11/mi&2). There were 2,292 housing units at an average density of 2/km&2 (5/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 98.82% White , 0.20% Black or African American , 0.14% Native American , 0.08% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 0.16% from Other Races , and 0.58% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,902 households out of which 32.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.20% were Married Couples living together, 7.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% were non-families. 28.20% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.16.

In the county the population was spread out with 28.60% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 24.10% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 19.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $27,409, and the median income for a family was $33,529. Males had a median income of $23,836 versus $16,866 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $14,474. 16.80% of the population and 13.40% of families were below the Poverty Line . 21.70% of those under the age of 18 and 13.50% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
