CURRICULUM SEM is known for its arduous Advanced Placement program, especially in mathematics and the sciences. The school offers a "fast-track" math curriculum allows students to finish Calculus AB and BC by their sophomore or junior year. However, the program has received some criticism because of the gap in math education during student's senior year, although no significant decline has been observed. SEM also stresses a philosophy of hands-on science education. It is the only high school in the nation to offer concurrent lab classes where students are exposed to college level laboratory experience along with their AP science curriculum. SEM also holds the bragging rights for being one of the only high schools in the nation to own a functioning Electron Microscope reserved solely for student use. PRESTIGE SEM was ranked as 6th in the nation in 2005 according to Newsweek's Best Public High Schools (SEM's rival, TAG Magnet , was not allowed to participate because of their admission policies) In 2006, Newsweek Magazine ranked SEM the 8th Best High School in the United States. The College Board announced that SEM is #1 in the world for passing minorities in Calculus BC. In 2005 , SEM received the prestigious Blue Ribbon School award by the U.S. Department Of Education . In 2006 , SEM was honored by a visit from President George W. Bush for excellence in education and the school's philosophy of stressing math and science, something he stressed in his 2006 State Of The Union Address . SEM consistently ranks #2 in D Magazine 's Best Public High Schools in Dallas. The inventor of Sun Chips , Dr. Larry Wilson, is a member of the faculty. EXTERNAL LINKS
