School libraries are similiar to Public Libraries in that they contain books, films, recorded sound, periodicals, and other media. These items are not only for the enjoyment of the patrons, but to enhance the school district's Curriculum . Traditionally, only students and staff members may check out material from this type of library, though some schools permit parents and other members of the community to do so as well.
Media centers are usually staffed by Teacher-librarian s who hold a teaching certificate. Often, the Librarian , or ''media specialist'', will have training in Library Science . The media specialist, sometimes assisted by aids, volunteers, or other teachers, is in charge of most aspects of the school library. These include, but are not limited to, the purchase of books and material, the checking out of books, shelving, cataloging, facilitating Interlibrary Loan s, and dealing with Challenged Books . Librarians are often responsible for audio-visual equipment and are sometimes in charge of the school's Computer s as well.
At the Elementary level, teacher-librarians read to children, assist them in selecting books, develop information literacy, and assist with schoolwork. At the Secondary level, TLs will assist students with Research and sometimes run study halls.
