School Certificate




The School Certificate is a qualification issued by the Board Of Studies, New South Wales , typically at the end of Year 10. The successful completion of the School Certificate is a requirement for completion of the Higher School Certificate .


EXAMS

There are four exams in English-literacy, Science, Mathematics and Australian History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship. There is a trial program for a Computing Skills test. Exams are always held over two days in November.


REQUIREMENTS

Each student must study English, Mathematics, Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PD/H/PE) every year from Years 7-10.

At some time during years 7-10 students must study courses in Creative Arts, Technology and Applied Science and Languages Other than English. These are generally Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Wood Technology, Food Technology, Computers, and a language determined by the school (usually French or Japanese).

The student must also complete a certain number of electives. Some of the electives are Information and Software Technology, Food Technology/Hospitality, Wood Technology, Sport Studies, Japanese, French and Metalwork


AUSTRALIAN CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION

There has been talk of replacing all the state certificates (the SC, HSC, VCE, etc.) with a national certificate.
