Sarduri II (ruled 764-735 BCE) was the King of Urartu (modern-day Armenia ). The Urartian Kingdom was at it's peak during his reign. He succeeded his father Argishti I to the throne. Aleppo was taken from the Assyrian s and subsequently, the Assyrians lost their contact with the Mediterranean Sea . Sarduri II penetrated almost as far as Nineveh , the Assyria n capital. He annexed Anatolia n territory in the west, specifically Kummuhu, and campaigned across northern Syria and into Cilicia. Sarduri has also left some written records of his reign, two steles, one found which was placed in two large niches inside the cult section of the Temple , on the northeastern slopes of the Tushpa fortress which is a rock stele contains information about the events during his reign, the other stele has disappeared a long time ago. Similar steles have been found at the sites, Ispuini and Sardurihinili ( Cavustepe ). Sarduri II's reign brought around great prosperity and wealth. The fortress at Sarurihinili (Cavustepe) shows the advance level of Urartian architecture. Sardur II was so confident in his power that he erected a massive wall at Tushpa (Van) with the following inscription: :"''the magnificent king, the mighty king, king of the universe, king of the land of Nairi, a king having none equal to him, a shepherd to be wondered at, fearing no battle, a king who humbled those who would not submit to his authority.''" But, in the reign of Tiglath-Pileser III , the military situation began to change against the Urartians. Sarduri II was succeeded to the throne by Rusas I .
