Information About

San Juan Cacahuatepec

Official documents concerning the foundation of this city do not exist, so the only source of information are old stories told to old people in the region by their ancestors.

These stories comment that before the conquest, this place was a stronghold under the reign of King Mixteco, who in the era dominated the region and some kilometres around it. In this place there still exists a hill made of large rocks that today can be found inside the city. In this hill there is a construction used formerly as school and, nowadays, as a military base.

The hill was known to the mixtecos (natives) as YUCOSHIVA, which in the amuzgo's dialect means Hill of the Stone (From Yuco: hill and Shiva: stone), since in said hill existed a great rock that stood out from the others.

South to this place and not far away there is a town called Pueblo Viejo (Its ancient name is unknown) whose main source of income came from the cultivation of Cacao, its orchads were in what today is known as Cacahuatepec.

The foundation was originated with the arrival of originating indigenous families according to versions, from Ixcapa, Tlacoachixtlahuaca, Gro., that were dedicated to the culture of the Cacao, later arrived but families coming from the Maguey, surrounding Martyrs of Tacubaya and towns, that increased the population. With the great production of the Cacao the well-known mestizos arrived to date as those of reason and by then already the population like Cacahuatepec knew itself that is a word mixteca that agriculture means "in the hill of cacao" CACAHUATL (cacao) TEPETL (hill), in these fertile earth also bloomed, cultivating the tobacco, peanut, maize, frijol, sandia, sesame, etc., existing some varieties of fruit trees like handle, papaya, orange, lemon trees, all these in small scale, which are not operated properly, causing this the arrival of more inhabitants in its majority racially mixed. Like in most of our catholic towns, they took like Santo patrono to San Juan Baptist, of where its catholic megres name mixteco San Juan BAPTIST CACAHUATEPEC. This zone is well-known also like the Low Mixteca and like Small Coast, the one of mixteca to belong to the knot mixteco of the Mountain range Western Mother and by his first inhabitants of pure origin mixteco and Small Coast, as it also evoked the inmortal Alvaro Cheek in his songs, is by its proximity with the great coast whose beaches of natural beauty are known world-wide, like Acapulco, Hidden Port, and less beautiful others not to conserve still its privacy locking up a tropical wonderful world as Chacahua, the Light (End Maldonado, municipality of Cuajinicuilapa Gro. - note of Pedro Francisco Celis Mendoza -), Corralelo etc., this is San Juan Cacahuatepec Baptist Villa Juárez, constructed on a rough land with houses of marinates and partitions with ceilings of already senile roofing tiles, dumb witnesses of the passage of the Revolution and with her their personages, tell to an anecdote of Dn. Porfirio Diaz at their time of revolutionary, who pass by this place persecuting to another revolutionary of Salty last name, which reached in Ixcapa, Oax., place where first wound received his military, were other known revolutionaries less but not less revolutionaries than motivated to the popular in excess local trovadores that still are let listen by these times. In order to arrive at San Juan Cacahuatepec Baptist, years ago it was made by dirt roads or of horseshoe, with their progress later breaches were opened, at the time of splendor of agriculture was arrived by airplanes, which as well removed the great production from tobacco and it was not until epoca in which the C. Alfonso governed the state of Oaxaca Perez Gazga, pinotepense of origin but costeño of greatness, worrying about the progress of the coast was constructed this way the highway that takes its name and that goes from National Pinotepa, Oax., to the State Capital, this highway unites the following towns having like point departure National Pinotepa, happening through Ixcapa, Cacahuatepec, Amuzgos, Zacatepec, Inns, Putla, Tlaxiaco, Nochixtlán and the State Capital. In these dates this being paved the section that includes/understands Pinotepa - Putla, hoping that it is a reality, because we considered it just and necessary, since all the production in agriculture, fruitgrowing and cattle ranch, goes to Acapulco, Gro., favoring its commerce instead of the capital of this state of Oaxaca that as much needs it, as well as surrounding Cacahuatepec and towns need the commerce of the state, agrarian technical assistance that is the base in the progress of our towns, since its agriculture is become impoverished every day by the so primitive technique that they use at the present time, as to destroy and to burn mounts and to seed with enduyos (Tips of steel), its system of irrigation governs the mother nature hoping single the rain storm, losing itself the greater amount of water which ends at the sea without greater benefit. In spite of previously exposed one obtains a good maize production, frijol, sesame, sandia, papaya, handle in his different varieties, lemon, tamarind, orange, etc., these last ones badly are exploded since most of the fruits one loses in the ground favoring the plagues.
