The Lower Salm became part of the County of Salm-Reifferscheid in 1416 . The Upper Salm was also partitioned, and many of these states became Wild- and Rhinegraviates. In 1803 , when the bishopric of Münster was secularized, part of it was given to the princes of Salm-Salm and Salm-Kyrburg . This new principality of Salm, covering the area around Borken , Ahaus and Bocholt , was a member of the Confederation Of The Rhine . In 1811 it was annexed by France, as a part of the Lippe Département . After the defeat of Napoleon in 1813 , it was Mediatized to Prussia . COUNTS OF SALM OF THE HOUSE OF ARDENNES (1019 - 1165)
