Sakaki (azumanga Daioh)

BIOGRAPHY

Tall and soft-spoken, Sakaki is uncomfortable with her tough-looking exterior as well as her busty physique. Because she is so shy she doesn't speak much, and her reticence is misinterpreted as "tough," "mysterious," or "cool." Other girls develop a girl-crush on Sakaki for being so "cool," (esp. Kaorin ) but what they don't know is that she would much rather trade in her chic persona for Chiyo-like cuteness. It is a running gag that everyone around Sakaki is completely oblivious to her love of cute things - e.g., knowing that Sakaki loves bears, Yomi buys her a can of bear stew, to Sakaki's great horror.

Sakaki is a natural athlete, even though she's not particularly interested in sports; rather, her secret passion is all things cute, especially stuffed animals. She's also quite taken with cats. Unfortunately, cats hate her for some unknown reason with one in particular, a gray cat known as Kamineko , having an affinity for biting her at any given opportunity. Kagura theorizes cats think her hand smells like fish. One subtitle in the original manga explains that Kamineko suspects that Sakaki approaches him with murderous intent. If that is the case, a part of the responsibility rests with her even though she may not be conscious of wearing that intent. Actually, she showed a terrible expression when she tried to receive Tama, or Marco, an abandoned cat Yukari picked up, from Yomi and to hold him. More importantly, this is a pun on her name, using the Japanese word 殺気, ''sakki'', meaning "bloodthirst" or "killing intent".

Because of her soft spot for cuteness, she is often seen with Chiyo and her Great Pyrenees ( Mr. Tadakichi ). She has a very strong desire for friendship as well, which led her to attach herself to the group and causes her to cherish memories such as the trips to Chiyo's Summer Home.

Later, after visiting Okinawa , she adopts an Iriomote Cat which she names Mayaa .

In the anime Sakaki is called "an American" despite her clearly Japanese ethnicity, because she is unusually busty and tall for a Japanese girl her age. (In one episode her height is given as 174cm, which is extraordinarily tall for a Japanese woman.)

Oddly, Sakaki occasionally has visions of a floating yellow cat-like creature that claims to be Chiyo's Father , a belief Sakaki has stuck with ever since.

TRIVIA

  • Like Kagura, Sakaki's given name goes unmentioned in both the anime and manga. "Sakaki" is read with the character for "evergreen tree", which is considered sacred within Shinto , and are often found on the grounds of shrines.

  • Nonononn from Magical Play resembles Sakaki in that they share traits from the same character design of Kiyohiko Azuma , the manga's author.
