HISTORY AND SOME FACTS

First plans for a metro already existed in 1899 , but subterranean building turned out to be generally difficult in Saint Petersburg because of underground rivers and cavities. Also wars and revolutions stopped the construction of the Saint Petersburg Metro more than once.

The modern system's history began in 1940 when construction of a line linking together all of the central rail terminals commenced. Offset by the World War II , the system was triumphantly opened on 15 November 1955 , with the first line opening starting from the Moskovkiy rail terminal and continuing south-west into the Kirovskiy industrial zone. Decoratively the first stations are the most beautiful in the system. The following years saw numerous extensions, and the system swelled into the second largest in Russia.

Some of the features of the Saint Petersburg Metro make it stand out amongst others. First of all, the station design went through numerous phases. The original stations were predominantly Pylon type. From the 1960's a new design called "horizontal lift" became popular, however, it did not prove successful, and from mid- 1970's the new "single-vault" became the most numerous. Currently the Saint Petersburg metro is the only one in the former Soviet Union that extends outside the city's borders, into the Leningrad Oblast .

NUMBERS

The system currently consists of 4 lines with 59 metro stations and a total 101.7 km of track length. Most (56) of the stations are deep level. Of them, 15 follow the single vault design, 14 the column type and 13 the pylon type, in addition there are 10 "horizontal lifts". Three stations are shallow, and all of them are column type. Another three stations are surface level. Five depots provide a total of 1403 cars which form 188 trains to transfer a daily 3.43 million passengers.

FUTURE PLANS

The Metro has a very large expansion plan for the next half a century. The current Pravoberezhnaya Line will be split in 2008 and a new line ( Kupchinsko-Primorskaya ) will open with a new radius to the south, taking the northern radius of Pravoberezhanya Line. After that is completed a ring line will open as well, and other biradial lines will come through the city centre. The Pravoberezhnaya Line will also extend to the northwest under the Gulf Of Finland .
