Safety Harbor Middle has many classes for Gifted students.

IMAST

IMAST stands for Integrated Mathematics and Science Technology. It is a science program for qualified gifted students who are gifted in science. IMAST originally was designed to complement the MEGSSS program to allow the students of Safety Harbor Middle School to use their math skills out of the math classroom. Many students in IMAST are in MEGSSS, but there are also students who are not in MEGSSS who are in IMAST. The same curriculum is used for the IMAST program as for all the other science classes. The thing that is different about IMAST is that it is taught in a very comprehensive manner. Students use a variety of techniques such as hands-on lab activities, in-depth investigations, and research. The students use computer technology and current science issues to study a variety of projects and interdisciplinary studies. They also need to maintain an A or B average and have an interest in science. The IMAST classes cover a wide variety of topics and areas in one year.
Sixth-grade IMAST is a hands-on study of astronomy, geology, meteorology and oceanography.

Seventh-grade IMAST includes the different types of cells and their functions, viruses and bacteria, the biology of plants and the classification of animals. Special emphasis is placed on the human body and its structures and functions.

The eighth-grade IMAST classes go over energy and motion, sound and light, machines, the periodic table, atomic structures, chemical bonds and reactions, and current events that relate to technology.

MEGSSS

MEGSSS is an exceptional student course. It stands for Mathematics Education for Gifted Secondary School Students and allows mathematically gifted students to take advanced math classes. You take pre-alegebra in 6th, Algebra 1 in 7th, and geometry in 8th. Thomas Heerschap has been teaching MEGSSS longer than any other teacher at Safety Harbor Middle, and leads a mathematics team to a competition called MathCounts every year.
