Traditionally recognised as a small sport confined to the North of England and Eastern Australia, league has seen a surge of expansion in recent years, the UK now boasting clubs Nationwide. Wales, Ireland and Scotland now run domestic competitions. In England the game is played from Kent to Newcastle and Bristol to Cumbria. Serbia, Germany, Estonia, Georgia, Lebanon, Morocco, Russia, France , Malta, Italy, Greece and Portugal are all new countries to take up the game under the Rugby League European Federation banner. The NNRLB are now recognised as the governing body for Rugby League in the Netherlands . Rugby League was first played in the Netherlands in 2003 when two Netherlands sides hosted two national touring sides from Scotland . Their first entry into major competitions was in 2005 when the Netherlands entered the Rugby League European Nations Cup for the first time, losing to Georgia 34-14 but beating Serbia 26-10. They will enter the European Nations Cup qualifiers again in 2006 , their first step towards 2008 Rugby League World Cup qualification. SEE ALSO |
