A rote, also called a ''crwth'', is an ancient instrument, a variety of Lyre . It often, though not necessarily always, had six strings. The rote was of Anglo-Saxon make, and has been found at the 7th Century ship burial at Sutton Hoo . The Friar in Chaucer 's '' Canterbury Tales '' played a rote. |
