Information About

Roses Theatre

The Roses Theatre opened in October 1975 by Her Royal Highness The Princess Anne and was run by the Tewkesbury Council from its opening until 1980. In 1980, Crossroads star, Stan Stennett took on the role as manager under a 13 year lease.

During his lease, while performing at the theatre in May 1984, Eric Morcambe, famous British comedian and part of the duo of Eric and Ernie, suffered a heart attack in Dressing Room 1 of the theatre and died shortly afterwards. The Roses Theatre remembers his life by naming a conference room as "The Eric Morcambe Room".

In April 1993 Stan's lease of the theatre ran out and was not renewed. Tewkesbury Council refurbished the theatre in 1994 and reopened The Roses Theatre under the management of The Crummells Theatre Company.

The Roses Theatre faced financial difficulties after being rejected for a grant funding. The theatre closed its doors after being declared bankrupt in 1995.

For almost a year the theatre stood empty. In 1996 The Roses Theatre Trust was formed and with the appointment of Robert Hamlin, Director of the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry from 1980 to 1996, the Roses Theatre re-opened as a charitable trust.

The Roses Theatre has continued to grow and now has audience figures of nearly 90,000 people a year. The Roses, as it is now known, is a sucess story.
