According to Romance Writers of America , two basic elements comprise every Romance Novel : a central love story and an emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending. There are two formats for romance fiction novels: Series or "Category" romances, and Single-title romances. Publishers of these romance novels include Harlequin/Silhouette which publishes what are known as "series" or "category" romance lines. The lines currently available through the Harlequin imprint are (as described at eHarlequin): Harlequin Romance: The heroines are engaging and believable, and whether the story is set in an exotic setting or somewhere a little closer to home, these romances are the ultimate in feel-good romantic fiction. Harlequin American Romance - Romance the all-American way! Highly charged attractions become intense, emotionally exciting, seductive romances that will leave you wanting more. Harlequin Superromance: Romance has never felt more real! This series offers you more than the romantic relationship by providing a variety of stories that portray the complete lives of the main characters. It's mainstream romance with the promise of happy ever after. Other New York City publishers such as Time-Warner, Kensington and Dorchester publish single-title romance. Even Tor, traditionally a SFF publisher, now has a romance line. There are also magazine publishers who publish romantic short-story fiction. The generally accepted sub-genres are historical, paranormal (including devices such as time-travel--and in the mid-2000s--a popular trend of vampires and shapeshifters), inspirational (religious), suspense and contemporary. Erotica and Chicklit are included by many members of the romance writing community, but there is some controversy withing RWA about their inclusion. |
