It consists of eight civil , Orleans , Plaquemines , St. Bernard , St. Charles , St. John The Baptist , St. Tammany , and Washington . There are 488,584 Catholics in the Archdiocese, 36% of the total population in the area. The archdiocese is headed by Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes . The Cathedral is St. Louis Cathedral . There are 142 church parishes in the archdiocese. The archdiocese has 410 priests (including those belonging to religious orders), 190 permanent deacons, 111 brothers, and 739 sisters. The Diocese of Louisiana was founded in 1793 and encompassed territory from Florida to Canada ; by the 1830's the diocese had been reduced in size and was now known as the Diocese of New Orleans.
